Clofi is a synthetic, non-steroidal medication that closely resembles estrogen in structure. It is commonly utilized as an ovulatory stimulant. Due to its similarity to estrogen, Clofi can attach to estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus, preventing the hypothalamus from detecting "real" estrogen, which results in the stimulation of the pituitary gland to release more gonadotropins such as FSH and LH. These hormones promote the ovaries or testes to produce higher levels of estrogen or testosterone.
This characteristic of Clofi is frequently leveraged to treat women experiencing ovarian failure and to provoke ovulation. However, prolonged use of this medication may pose risks, including an elevated chance of ovarian cancer.
Clofi is a sizable molecule that dissolves in most organic solvents, including alcohol. The sodium salt of citrate is also water-soluble. The chemical itself is odorless. Clomiphene is available in 50 mg tablet form. Patients prescribed Clofi must undergo a complete evaluation for all gynecological and endocrine disorders prior to commencing treatment.
